With a crystalline voice, shimmering pop production, and lyrics that cut deep to the truth of life and love, Kaylee Johnston writes the songs that make you want to leave your heart on the dance floor.
Over the past 3 years Kaylee has written over 400 songs, honing her sound and perfecting her craft. The result is her most recent self-titled EP released June 3rd 2016, a collection of unforgettable hooks, empowerment anthems, and shiny dance floor gems. Taking influence from artists like Stevie Nicks, Heart, and Joan Jett, her songs combine upbeat production with personal, touching lyrics. Kaylee explains, “I was working on an electro-pop album, but it always felt like something was missing, so I went back to the basics. The new EP sounds fresh to me... a combination of organic instruments mixed with hints of electronic sounds.”
A charmingly energetic performer, Kaylee delivers her ear-catching pop hooks with a crisp, intoxicating voice that is distinct and unforgettable. Opening for Dragonette and Ace of Base, and sharing the stage with Carly Rae Jepsen, Marianna's Trench, One Republic, and Joe Jonas, Kaylee has developed a live show you won’t be able to take your eyes off. Prepare to dance, laugh and cry as she takes you on an exhilarating journey through heart break to triumph.
Her first single, “Getting Over You”, remixed by LA-based duo Stu G & Robot Disco Puma, and mixed by Orlando Vitto (Kelly Clarkson, Kelly Rowland, Britney Spears), has captured the attention of critics and fans alike, garnering comparisons to indie-pop favourites Robyn and Carly Rae Jepsen. Publications like Beatroute BC are praising it as “A punchy empowerment jam that is rooted in experiencing the magic that happens when a break up turns into an opportunity”. The music video for the title track, directed by Dan LeMoyne and produced by The Field, has already gained upwards of 45,000 views on YouTube.
Since the EP’s release, Kaylee has been popping up on media across Canada, appearing on Toronto’s CP24 morning show, Sirius XM, Shaw TV Vancouver, and HMV in-store interview with Toronto-based blog A Music Blog Yea. With her single “Are You The One” counting upwards of 240,000 streams on Spotify, Kaylee showcased at Rifflandia and Break Out West in the fall, leading to connections through out Canada and the UK. Now living between London and Vancouver, Kaylee is currently working on her next album.
